Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/1bmWO8h Photographs show the moment one of the Turkish Prime Minister's advisors appears to furiously kick a protestor, in the aftermath of a mine disaster. The photographs were spread worldwide through social media, one day after hundreds of workers were killed in a mine in Soma. The Prime Minister's office was not immediately available to comment after his close advisor, Yusuf Yerkel, was captured kicking the man, as special forces police detained him during a protest. Today rescuers have still been trying to reach parts of the coal mine almost 48 hours after a fire knocked out power and shut down ventilation shafts and elevators, trapping hundreds underground. Trouble has flared on the country's streets as grief turned to anger in the wake of the accident. At least 282 people have been confirmed dead and hopes are fading of pulling out any more alive of the 100 or so still thought to be inside. Report by Claire Lomas. Turkish mine disaster:Turkish PM Erdoğan punches man in Soma
Turkish PM Erdoğan allegedly punches man in Soma Erdoğan allegedly punches man in Soma, aide kicks mourner Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan allegedly punched a young man several times in Soma on Wednesday, after a large crowd angrily protested the recent mining disaster in which an explosion and fire killed at least 283 mineworkers. Many people in the crowd protested Erdoğan's presence, shouting that he is a "murderer" and a "thief," reportedly forcing the prime minister to take shelter in a grocery store. However, some reports claim that Erdoğan entered the store not to avoid the protests but rather to follow -- and subsequently punch -- a young man who had shouted at him outside the store. Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputy Lütfü Türkkan has claimed that he has spoken to the man who Erdoğan punched, saying that the young man's name is Taner Kuruca. Sharing the details of the conversation via micro blogging site Twitter, Türkkan wrote: "I spoke to Kuruca. The man said that he was shopping at the store when Erdoğan attacked him, thinking that he was a protester. He said that he was also beaten by Erdoğan's bodyguards.. Kuruca told me that only thing that he clearly remembers was that Erdoğan assaulted him." Reports allege that the young man, wearing a blue t-shirt, chanted slogans critical of Erdoğan and then entered the store. Erdoğan then followed the protester inside, grabbed the man and then punched him two or three times, according to eyewitness reports. The owner of the store corroborated the reports, saying that he saw surveillance camera footage showing that Erdoğan was punching a man, adding, "The bodyguards took away the footage and suggested that I not mention the issue." A video of the incident shared on the popular video-sharing platform YouTube shows Erdoğan telling the protester, "Come next to me and boo me," before walking up to the one man into the store then. At one point during the video Erdoğan grabs the protestor and punches him. In the video footage, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç and Interior Minister Efkan Ala are seen entering the store after Erdoğan and attempting to calm him down. Erdoğan's anger and nervousness can be seen on his face as he leaves the store. Tensions were high as hundreds of relatives and miners jostled outside the coal mine waiting for news, with a heavy police presence. Many women wept uncontrollably, men knelt sobbing while others just stared in disbelief as rescue workers removed a steady stream of bodies throughout the night and early morning. After the incident Erdoğan's bodyguards are alleged to take footage from surveillance cameras which may have recorded the incident. A number of people showed strong reactions to Erdoğan's visit. Rocks were thrown at the police, who clamped down strongly on the protesters. Police set up fences and stood guard around Soma state hospital during Erdoğan's visit. Opposition parties in Parliament strongly criticized Erdoğan over the alleged incident. Speaking to Today's Zaman, main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Haluk Koç described Erdoğan's behavior as shameful; "Erdoğan's hate speech knows no limits and he has gone so far as to resort to violence against a citizen. The government's irresponsible acts have turned into cruelty against citizens. It was clear that Erdoğan's continued insulting discourse would result in violence. How can we think of Erdoğan as a human after this violent act? He now turned out to be a symbol of hatred." Commenting on the violent act, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Deputy Chairwoman Ruhsar Demirel said that people are mourning the victims of the tragic mine disaster and all of us feel deep sorrow. "Given the atmosphere, I hope the video footage turns out not to be authentic. There is no place for such a burst of anger. No matter what your position is, even a prime minister, all criticism should be listened to and considered in silence. Politicians should show respect to citizens' criticisms and reactions. I hope that the footage of the incident is not real," Demirel said.President Abdullah Gül also faced protests in Soma while visiting the mine. Relatives of mineworkers who lost their lives chanted, "Return the bodies to us" and "We don't want you." Some relatives of workers are heard shouting at Gül to leave the scene, saying that the rescue teams cannot work properly due to Gül's visit, adding, "We are in need of rescue teams. We do not need for police or you. Go away!" An adviser of Erdoğan kicked a mourner In addition to Erdoğan, an aide of his also engaged in violence, this time against a mourner whose family members had been killed in the mine disaster. Yusuf Yerkel, an adviser to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, sparked further anger after being photographed kicking a mourner in Soma.- published: 15 May 2014

Death Toll May Top 400 in Turkey Mine Explosion Disaster
More than 400 possibly dead in Turkey mine disaster SOMA, Turkey -- The death toll in the coal mine explosion and fire in western Turkey increased to 232 on Wednesday, the prime minister said. The fate of around 190 miners remained unclear in one of Turkey's worst mining disasters. Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the announcement Wednesday during a visit to the coal mine in Soma, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Istanbul. Earlier, Erdogan declared three days of national mourning, ordering flags to be lowered to half-staff. Erdogan postponed a one-day visit to Albania and visited Soma instead. The explosion tore through the mine as workers were preparing for a shift change, officials said, which likely raised the casualty toll because there were more miners inside the mine than usual. Mining accidents are common in Turkey, which is plagued by poor safety conditions. Turkey's worst mining disaster was a 1992 gas explosion that killed 263 workers near the Black Sea port of Zonguldak. In Istanbul, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the headquarters of the company which owns the mine, Soma Holding. Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said 787 people were inside the coal mine in Soma at the time of the explosion and 363 of them had been rescued so far. "Regarding the rescue operation, I can say that our hopes are diminishing," Yildiz said. Turkey's Labor and Social Security Ministry said the mine had been inspected five times since 2012, including in March of 2014, and that no issues violating work safety and security were detected. The country's main opposition party said that Erdogan's ruling party had recently voted down a proposal for the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry into a series of small scale accidents at mines around Soma. Activists blamed the government for lax safety regulations and called on the leadership to resign over the affair. Police deployed tear gas and water cannon against the crowds, which converged on Taksim Square. Prime Minister Reccep Tayyip Erdogan visited the scene of the disaster earlier in the day, where he was booed by a vocal section of the crowd, who accused him of being a 'murderer' and 'thief'. Turkey faces serious consequences of Soma mining accident
The death toll from the explosion and fire in a coal mine in Turkey has climbed to 282. As many as 100 miners may still be trapped deep under the ground. The country has declared three days of mourning. The disaster occurred in the coal mine near the town of Soma in Manisa province, some 250 km south of Istanbul. According to preliminary data, the accident occurred as a result of short circuit in a switchboard, which triggered an explosion of methane. A fire then broke out in the mine at the depth of two kilometers. The supply of electricity was discontinued, elevators were stopped, and people found themselves trapped. At the time of the explosion, there were 787 miners underground; as many as 300 of them managed to escape to safety on the surface. Numerous actions of protest have gripped Turkey after the tragedy in Soma. Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Ankara and Istanbul, accusing the authorities and representatives of the mining industry of criminal negligence and demanding the resignation of the government.- published: 15 May 2014

Eighty more miners are injured while hundreds are still trapped deep underground. The miners have been trapped since Wednesday, following an explosion and fire in a mine shaft between 1 to 2 kilometres deep. CNN reports that the explosion was caused by an electrical fault inside a transformer and is believed to have caused a fire inside the mine shaft. The BBC says the blast triggered a power outage, which made the lifts unusable, leaving hundreds of miners stranded underground. Most of the deaths are believed to have been caused by suffocation, and there is little hope for the miners still trapped inside. To help them officials have turned an outlet pipe into a clean air pipe to allow fresh air to enter in places where there is no fire, CNN reported. But although oxygen is being pumped into the shaft, rescue efforts have been repeatedly suspended due to high levels of carbon monoxide. Nearly 450 miners have been rescued. As many as 200 are still missing, according to Voice of America. Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman says that mining accidents are common in Turkey, which is plagued by poor safety conditions. In 1992, in what was considered until now the worst mining disaster, 270 miners were killed near Zonguldak on the Black Sea. The International Labor Organization ranked Turkey the third worst in the world for worker deaths in 2012, according to Voice of America. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Turkey: death toll in Soma mining tragedy expected to top 300
The final death toll in Turkey's coal mine disaster is expected to be 302, the government announced on Friday. The rescue operation is continuing with 18 people still unaccounted for. Hopes of finding them alive are fading. 30-year old Murat Yokus was one of the lucky ones, pulled out alive after being trapped underground for four hours. Turkish Mine Explosion Turkish Coal Mine Explosion Turkish Explosion Mine Video Coal Mine Turkey Explosion turkey mine accident video turkey coal mine disaster news Turkish coal mine explosion kills 157, hundreds trapped: mayor An explosion followed by a fire in a coal mine in western Turkey killed 157 miners and trapped hundreds more on Tuesday, a provincial mayor said, in what appeared to be the country's worst mining accident in years. Rescue workers pumped oxygen into the mine to try to keep those still trapped by the blaze alive as thousands of family members and fellow workers, clamoring for information, gathered outside the town's hospital, held back behind police lines. The blast in the power unit of the mine in Soma, around 120 km (75 miles) northeast of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, triggered an electricity outage, making the elevators unusable and leaving hundreds of miners stranded underground. It was not immediately clear if the fire had been isolated. Cengiz Ergun, mayor of Manisa province where Soma is located, said nearly 600 workers were underground at the time of the explosion. Citing health officials at the entrance to the mine, he told broadcaster CNN Turk that 157 miners had died. Government officials told Reuters 104 people had been confirmed dead and 54 injured, but said the toll was likely to rise. Turkey's disaster response agency, AFAD, had earlier said 17 miners were killed. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan canceled a day trip to Albania, scheduled for Wednesday, and would instead go to the site of the disaster, sources in his office said. "Rescue efforts for our brothers in the mine are ongoing ... God willing, in the coming hours, I hope to receive uplifting news," Erdogan said during a speech at a ceremony in the capital Ankara, before the extent of the disaster became clear. Because the explosion took place during a change in shifts, there was uncertainty over the exact number of miners still inside, but AFAD put the figure at more than 200. "Fresh air, oxygen is being pumped into the mine. This is the most important thing for our workers down there," Energy Minister Taner Yildiz told reporters, on his way to Manisa. "We are facing carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide poisoning ... We have to get our friends out of there swiftly." At least eight people were brought out alive. Television footage showed rescued miners reunited with tearful relatives. But government officials feared the death toll might be on the rise. "Unfortunately, we could see a grimmer picture. Looks like it will be a very tough night. The death toll may rise but the rescue teams are working hard," one official said. Turkey's worst mining accident was in 1992, when a gas explosion killed 263 workers in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak. The country has a poor health and safety record in mining, particularly coal. In May 2010, another gas explosion killed 30 miners, again in Zonguldak province.
